Part-time professors vote to unionize

CORAOPOLIS— Part-time professors have voted to unionize at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh.

The results of the vote announced Tuesday must still be certified by the National Labor Relations Board. But once that happens spokesman Jonathan Potts says the school in Moon Township will move forward with “good-faith bargaining.”

The adjunct professors at Robert Morris are the third group in Pittsburgh to organize under the United Steelworkers of America, joining Point Park and Duquesne universities, both in Pittsburgh.

Robert Morris used 226 part-time professors in the fall.

Fed: No rate hike yet from record lows

WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve signaled Wednesday that it needs to see further improvement in the job market and higher inflation before it raises interest rates from record lows.

At the same time, the Fed at least opened the door to a rate increase later this year by no longer saying it will be “patient” in starting to raise its benchmark rate.

The statement the Fed issued after its latest policy meeting appeared to catch investors by surprise in suggesting that a rate increase might be further off than many had assumed. Stock prices surged and bond yields fell. The Dow Jones industrial average was up more than 220 points an hour later.
