SRU offers activity programs for children

For eight years, Slippery Rock University has offered the movement activity program Moving Concepts for children aged 3 to 5.

The class is taught by SRU students and run by Marybeth Miller, a physical and health education professor.

The class is a service learning program for the students, serving as a course for students who are majoring in physical education, elementary education, special education and early childhood education.

About 55 people participated in the most recent program, which started Feb. 5 and runs for 10 weeks. The program is free.

The program is for children both with and without disabilities and is intended to help develop motor skills and cooperation.

Miller said the course is centered around four concepts: body awareness, space awareness, effort or quality of movement and relationship to others. Each child has an individual teacher. Classes open with a movement activity set to music. Then, there are four activity areas. Each area is based on a different centerpiece related to the four concepts taught.
