House sustains major damage
CRANBERRY TWP — A home at 101 Fox Chase Court caught fire Monday afternoon, resulting in significant damage to its roof and siding.
The home, owned by resident James McElroy, caught fire just after 2 p.m. Officials at the scene couldn't provide a definitive cause of the fire, citing an impending investigation.
McElroy arrived at his house more than 45 minutes after the fire call was made and watched from the street as firefighters from departments around the area battled flames shooting from the roof and side.
Neighbors came to console the man, while another neighbor said there was at least one dog in the house at the time of the fire.
According to the neighbor, McElroy lives at the home with his wife. The couple also has two college-aged daughters who weren't home.
One neighbor, who declined to be identified, said he originally tried to go in the house to retrieve the dog, but was turned back by firefighters already on the scene.
Firefighters remained at the house for more than two hours before extinguishing the flames.
Chief Mark Nanna of the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Department said Tuesday morning that crews aren't sure how the fire started.
Nobody got hurt in the fire, Nanna said, which is the most important part, even if the house was severely damaged.
“The house was heavily damaged and it's not livable,” he said. “The homeowner is being helped by relatives.”
Nanna added that five other companies assisted.
