Senior send-off
JACKSON TWP — Team spirit was running high at Seneca Valley's natatorium Thursday night.
Senior Recognition Night saw the Raiders honor diver Brooke Walters and swimmers Holly Sauer, Spencer Myers and Mike Palaski. Then both the girls and boys team went out and rolled to a sweep of Butler by scores of 116-70 and 111-69, respectively.
For SV's boys, the win lifted the team's final record to 6-6.
“It was a good way to end the (regular) season,” said SV junior Spencer Tretter, who won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle. “We avoided a losing record and everyone's happy.”
Palaski also was a double individual winner in the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
“As of right now, we have qualified most of the boys we felt had a chance to get to WPIALs,” said Raiders' coach Brian Blackwell, “but we have a couple going to the (Last Chance Meet) Saturday at North Allegheny.”
Butler's lone double-winner on the boys side was Tukker Uniatowski (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly).
Butler senior Taylor Frankenstein made the WPIAL cut in the 100 backstroke, swimming a time of 1:00.5, four-tenths of a second under the standard. Frankenstein recently returned from a shoulder injury.
He barely missed qualifying in a home meet last week against Hampton.
“I'm happy to see Taylor got in,” said Butler coach Dave Bocci. “The meet as a whole, we had some good swims today and some okay swims. I feel good about us improving our (team) standing at WPIALs and the chances of us getting individuals to the state meet.”
The Raiders' girls (8-4) took first place in eight of the 12 events, including Kassi Grumski's victories in the 200 and 500 freestyle.
The Golden Tornado were led by Jillian McElhaney's wins in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
“I talked about racing strategy to Jillian after her swim in the 50,” said Bocci. “She needs to be aware of how she is executing her turns and when she is taking a breath during the race, things like that. It's going to come down to tenths of a second in the 50 at WPIALs. But I'm proud of her. She appears to be on the right track.”
