County struck by frigid weather

It’s going to be cold this weekend, so try to stay inside.

“If you can,” said Lee Hendricks, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.

The frigid temperatures started off this morning, with a 0 degree reading at 6 a.m. at the Butler County Airport. There was a wind chill of 11 degrees below zero.

It just will get worse this weekend, with temperatures projected to hit 4 degrees below zero Saturday night with a wind chill down to 23 degrees below zero.

The high is expected to be about 23.

The high Sunday will be only 3 degrees with wind chills up to 26 degrees below zero. Hendricks said temperatures that night are projected to drop to 10 degrees below zero with wind chills down to 20 degrees below zero.

The weather service has a wind chill watch in effect from Saturday night to Sunday morning for the county.

Additionally, 1 to 3 inches of snow is predicted to fall during the day Saturday. Hendricks said the snow should be dry snow, so blowing and drifting on roads is expected to happen.

With the cold temperature, conventional road salt will not be effective, so road crews will have to use other chemicals, Hendricks said.

As of this morning, it was too early to determine if the snow will cause travel problems, he said.

On Monday, temperatures will edge up a bit with a high of about 10 to 15 degrees, Hendricks said.
