Chemistry helps Trojans snap skid vs. rival

CRANBERRY TWP — Vince LeGrande didn’t just have faith that a hard-charging Isaiah Harvin would collect a blind three-quarter court pass.

Having played 20 games together, LeGrande was confident of what would follow.

Harvin, a 6-foot-3 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic forward collected the pass on a bounce, took a few steps before hammering in a one-handed dunk before halftime of the Trojans’ 76-67 home Section 2-A win over Vincentian Academy.

“I knew he would get it,” LeGrande said. “And I knew what he’d do with it.”

It’s a pass LeGrande may not have thrown two months ago. Developing chemistry is something the Trojans (13-7, 10-2) have worked toward all season.

“At the beginning of the season, we didn’t have much chemistry,” said LeGrande, who finished with 29 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks. “Guys are feeling good and are starting to get to know each other a little bit better. We know how each other play and are starting to get the wins that we want.”

Vincentian was a game all the North Catholic players — and the students who spilled out on the court to celebrate after the final whistle — wanted. The Trojans had lost six straight to the Royals, including an 89-86 overtime decision earlier this season.

“I try to explain their best effort is what should motivate them,” Trojans coach Dave Long said. “Not revenge or redemption or anything like that. You can talk about those things, but it’s in the back of their minds.”

Harvin’s dunk put North Catholic up 36-27 at the half. Harvin scored 16 points off the bench and feels comfortable in his role with the Trojans.

“I trusted the system and coach put faith in me and I came through for my teammates,” Harvin said.

The Royals’ offense pounded the glass and had good looks, but struggled to find their touch in the first half.

“We usually hit those shots,” Vincentian coach George Yokitis said. “We shot 27 percent in the first half. For some reason, we weren’t making them.”

The Royals made up for their slow start after LeGrande made a layup with 3:07 left in the third quarter to put North Catholic ahead by a game-high 11 points, 50-39.

Vincentian went on a 9-0 run in two minutes to cut the lead to 50-48, thanks to five points from Ryan Wolf and four turnovers by the Trojans. Wolf led the Royals with 30 points.

“I think we got carried away for a little bit and had to refocus,” Harvin said.

Vincentian tied the game at 62 on a 3-pointer by Zach McDonough and went ahead on a free throw by Jay Cortese with 4:06 remaining.

The Trojans answered with a driving layup from Tristan Newcamp and a jumper from LeGrande to go ahead for good, 66-63, with 3:20 remaining.

“We’ve been thinking about this game since last year,” LeGrande said. “This game has been tough for us. They’re our rivals and we wanted to give them everything we had.”
