Police officer cleared of any wrongdoing

Board says video was key evidence

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing by Pittsburgh’s Citizen Police Review Board, a decision stemming from an incident where the officer arrested a Harmony woman during the city’s PrideFest celebration.

Police last year arrested Ariel Lawther at the event after she struck an anti-gay activist and then struck a Pittsburgh police officer who was trying to arrest her.

Elizabeth Pittinger, the executive director of the police review board, said Thursday that video from the scene clearly shows Lawther striking the officer, which in turn justified the officer’s actions in taking Lawther to the ground and forcibly arresting her.

“The officer’s actions were not outside of the (police) bureau’s policies and procedures,” she said.

Pittinger called allegations that officers mishandled the arrest “unsustainable.”

“If you watch that video closely, the evidence seems to be consistent with the officer’s report,” she continued. “You can follow the entire incident.”

Lawther previously pleaded guilty to two counts of harassment in October.
