Butler school staff will get computers

Laptop lease OK'd; sports fee discussed

BUTLER TWP — Every teacher and administrator in the Butler School District this spring will receive a laptop computer for work.

The school board Tuesday night approved leasing 605 laptop computers with a three-year lease costing $133,000 per year. Laptop cases and external CD drives also were approved to buy.

Mark Taylor, IT director with Questec, said many of the district’s computers are out of date, and some required programs that teachers need are not compatible.

“If the school consolidation progresses the way we planned, we’re going to see that a lot of teachers are not going to have rooms. They’re going to have to be mobile,” he said. “They’re going to be teaching in multiple places.”

Having a lease, he added, is better than buying computers since updating technology every few years will keep district employees up to speed.

“We’re putting better tools into the hands of the educators,” Taylor said.

The computers will be leased through the Netech Corp. through Dell Financial Services.

During the athletic committee report, board members discussed the possibility of students paying to play sports, which will be voted on next month.

Athletic director Bill Mylan recommended athletes pay a one-time $60 fee per year, no matter how many sports they play. He estimated doing that could generate about $30,000 a year.

The fee would be discounted or waived for students who qualify for free or reduced lunches.

The board discussed putting that money in a discretionary fund for the athletic department to use.

The board also voted:

• To hire Arthur J. Gallagher and Co. of Pittsburgh as a health insurance and benefits consultant to assist the administration in ensuring compliance with the federal Affordable Care Act.

The district will pay $5,000 per month from February through June, and a fixed fee not to exceed $85,000 in the 2015-2016 school year.

• Not to raise property taxes above the state Act I index, which is 2.5 percent or 2.37 mills in the district for the 2015-16 school year.
