Yuengling beer excluded from bash

PHILADELPHIA — Yuengling bills its Pottsville brewery as the oldest in the nation, but it’s not being served at Gov.-elect Tom Wolf’s inaugural celebration and a Republican legislator thinks he knows why.

Republican state Rep. Mike Vereb told The Philadelphia Inquirer he doesn’t think it’s an accident that Yuengling was left off the list of beers being served at Tuesday night’s party.

Yuengling’s president, Richard Yuengling Jr., is a GOP activist who supports “right to work” laws that bar mandatory union dues and membership. Wolf received major support from organized labor in his campaign.

Inaugural spokesman Beth Melena says organizers simply met their “beverage needs” through other Pennsylvania breweries. Teamsters Local 830, which once represented some Yuengling workers, praised the Democrat as making a strong statement for Pennsylvania’s labor movement.
