Freeze in tuition proposed

UNIVERSITY PARK — Students at eight Penn State University regional campuses would have their tuition frozen next fall under a proposal made Friday by university President Eric Barron.

Under his plan, tuition would be held flat for Shenango, Beaver, DuBois, Fayette, Greater Allegheny, Mont Alto, New Kensington and Wilkes-Barre campuses for the 2015-16 academic year, according to a release from the school.

The school’s 11 other branch campuses would have tuition increases of 1.8 to 2.4 percent.

Barron presented the proposal to the school’s trustees, who would need to approve it before it would become effective.

Tuition at Penn State’s main campus was not discussed.

The campuses where the proposed tuition freeze would occur were picked based on factors such as the higher percentages of need-based students, socio-economic and demographic issues in the surrounding communities and Penn State’s potential to give career path opportunities to students in those areas of the state, the release said.
