IN BRIEF
CRANBERRY TWP — The Market Day location in the township will lay off about 43 people in early March.
The permanent layoffs will affect workers in the sales staff. The site will remain open.
The layoffs are happening because of a restructure of the sales operations, according to a company letter sent to the state Department of Labor and Industry to comply with the federal Workforce Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.
The letter, dated Jan. 7, said the company anticipates that roughly 43 people will be laid off about March 7.
Market Day, based in Itasca, Ill., sells food fundraising programs to schools.
HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania's casino industry has suffered its second straight year of declining revenue, a reflection of increased competition as East Coast states try to keep their own gamblers at home.Gross revenue at the state's 12 casinos dropped 1.44 percent in 2014 to just more than $3 billion, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. That's on top of a 1.4 percent decline in 2013 after six years of growth.“Increased competition from surrounding states, which are also offering conveniently located casinos to its highest populations centers such as in Pennsylvania, continues to be the biggest impact to growth here,” said gaming board spokesman Dough Harbach.
