DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers and left-handed reliever Tom Gorzelanny have agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract.
The 32-year-old Gorzelanny had a 0.86 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 23 appearances for Milwaukee last year. He began the season on the disabled list after offseason left-shoulder surgery.
Originally drafted by Pittsburgh in 2003, Gorzelanny has played parts of 10 seasons with the Pirates (2005-09), Chicago Cubs (2009-10), Washington Nationals (2011-12) and Brewers (2013-14). Overall, he is 47-51 with a 4.27 ERA and 674 strikeouts in 259 career appearances that include 121 starts.
NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma fired co-offensive coordinators Josh Heupel and Jay Norvell after one of the worst seasons during coach Bob Stoops' 16-year run as head coach.Stoops promoted Jerry Montgomery from defensive line coach to co-defensive coordinator.Oklahoma won the Sugar Bowl at the end of last season and entered this season with national championship hopes and a No. 4 ranking. The Sooners won five of their first six, but finished 8-5, ending the regular season with a stunning overtime loss to Oklahoma State, then losing to Clemson 40-6 in the Russell Athletic Bowl.
MIAMI — Former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum is returning to the AFC East, this time with the Miami Dolphins, who have shaken up their power structure yet again.Tannenbaum will take over the Dolphins' football operations beginning Feb. 1. General manager Dennis Hickey will report to Tannenbaum, while coach Joe Philbin will continue reporting directly to owner Stephen Ross.Tannenbaum was with the Jets from 1997 until 2012, when he was fired after seven seasons as GM. He worked the past two years as a sports agent before accepting Ross' offer.
MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Bucks welcomed Larry Sanders back, even if he was in street clothes and sitting on the end of the bench.The 6-foot-11 center had missed the last seven games, including Tuesday's 102-96 loss against the Phoenix Suns. He hasn't suited up since the Bucks' home game against Charlotte on Dec. 23.The team had not said much about his absence other than it was for personal reasons. That fueled speculation about what's really wrong and that he might even be done with basketball.Sanders was vague in his first public appearance with the team in two weeks, but said he was making progress, getting to the root of his issues and correcting them.
