IN BRIEF

BRADDOCK — Highmark's Allegheny Health Network has opened an urgent care center in Braddock, a Pittsburgh suburb where the rival University of Pittsburgh Medical Center closed a hospital almost five years ago.

UPMC closed the 123-bed hospital on Jan. 31, 2010, because it was losing money. Residents objected that it would cost the impoverished suburb badly needed jobs and make medical care inconvenient. The nearest UPMC urgent care center is nearly nine miles away in Pittsburgh's Shadyside neighborhood, according to a UPMC website.

The Braddock Urgent Care Center, which opened Monday, has 12 patient exam rooms, and facilities for blood work and X-rays.

LOS ANGELES — Petco says it has removed Chinese-made dog and cat treats from store shelves because of concerns they have sickened thousands of pets and killed 1,000 dogs in the U.S. since 2007.The company's Monday announcement makes it the first national pet retailer to pull the treats. Rival PetSmart said Monday that it plans to have them off shelves by March. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says initial tests haven't connected the Chinese jerky and rawhide treats to the illnesses. The FDA targeted the treats after receiving more than 4,800 complaints of illnesses, including the deaths, after pets ate jerky treats from China.Petco Vice President John Sturm says all treats are now made in the U.S. or places such as the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia and South America.

NEW YORK — The price of oil plunged again Monday and fell below $50 a barrel for the first time since April 2009 as evidence mounted that the world will be oversupplied with oil this year.Benchmark U.S. oil dipped to $49.77 before closing down $2.65, or 5 percent, to $50.04 a barrel. Brent crude, a global benchmark used to price oil used by many U.S. refineries, sank $3.31, or 5.9 percent, to $53.11.In June of last year oil traded above $107 a barrel. But rising production outside of OPEC, especially in the U.S., boosted supplies just as weakness in the global economy slowed the growth in oil demand. OPEC's decision in November to maintain existing production levels accelerated the rout in oil prices.
