CWNC football coach retires
CRANBERRY TWP — After nine seasons, 74 wins, a 27-game winning streak and a the only WPIAL and PIAA football championships in school history, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic head football coach Bob Ravenstahl retired New Year's Eve.
“Yeah, I decided to retire (Wednesday),” Ravenstahl said. “I guess I've reached my prime.”
The Trojans went 16-0 under Ravenstahl in 2013, capped by a 15-14 win over Old Forge in the PIAA Class A championship game in Hershey.
Cardinal Wuerl won the WPIAL title the same season by downing Sto-Rox, 14-0.
Cardinal Wuerl began this season 11-0 before falling to rival Avonworth, 28-21, in the WPIAL semifinals at Mars in November.
Ravenstahl, a 1972 graduate of North Catholic, said he has been pondering retirement for some time before he ultimately decided to walk away Wednesday.
Ravenstahl, the father of former Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl, was 74-25 during his time as the Trojans' head coach, including a 36-4 record the last three seasons.
Cardinal Wuerl also loses a plethora of impact seniors, including running back PJ Fulmore, who finished his four-year career at the school with more than 4,000 yards rushing.
Also leaving is senior running back Jerome Turner, who won the Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy this season.
A picture of Ravenstahl appears on the Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic website with the words, “Thank you Coach Rave!” written on it.
Several calls placed to Cardinal Wuerl athletic director Mike Burrell were unanswered.
