Firefighters douse electrical blaze in Lancaster Twp.
LANCASTER TWP — Firefighters extinguished an electrical fire early Sunday morning at a Metcalf Road house.
No one was injured.
Chief Neal Nanna of the Harmony Volunteer Fire Company said the wiring inside the walls between the basement and the first floor at 210 Metcalfe Road ignited.
“It had an electrical short that started the fire,” Nanna said.
He said the fire extended up to the attic.
“It ran up the walls,” Nanna said.
Smoke detectors alerted the couple living in the house to the problem.
Nanna said the husband, Tony Hendricks, tried to put out the fire with a garden hose, but the fire spread to the walls’ exterior.
Although the attempt was unsuccessful, Nanna said firefighters quickly doused the blaze.
He said the walls had to be torn down to ensure all the flames were doused.
Nanna estimated damages at $30,000. He said the couple renting the house and the owners, the Dorshes, are insured.
Roughly 30 firefighters responded to the 12:01 a.m. 911 call.
The Zelienople and Evans City volunteer fire departments assisted Harmony.
Crews cleared the scene at 3:25 a.m.
