PITTSBURGH — A landslide, wastewater spill and other issues at a southwestern Pennsylvania natural gas drilling site are resulting in a $1 million fine.

Vantage Energy of Englewood, Colo., has to pay the money immediately and clean up the site by the end of 2015.

The company signed an agreement last week with the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The DEP said a landslide at the Greene County shale well pad damaged and blocked streams. State regulators say that was before a contractor dumped wastewater at the site near Waynesburg.

Vantage produced gas from 14 Greene County wells in the first half of 2014.

ERIE — A contractor has been sentenced to six months in prison for falsely telling the government that he had plugged abandoned northwestern Pennsylvania oil wells in accordance with environmental regulations.A federal judge in Erie also ordered 45-year-old Ronald Wright of Pleasantville to pay more than $236,000 restitution to his former employer, S&T Services and Supply to cover costs of re-plugging wells.Wright apologized Monday, saying he couldn't explain his actions. He pleaded guilty in August to one count of “false writing or document to the government.”Prosecutors said he filed false certificates that environmental regulators relied upon to approve an injection well in Elk County, and all of the 95 wells he plugged over seven years will likely have to be re-plugged.

WILKES-BARRE — State environmental officials have announced an $800,000 settlement with a gas pipeline company for what officials said was failure to keep sediment from running into streams in northern Pennsylvania during construction of a pipeline in 2011 and 2012.The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company will pay a $210,000 penalty and fund a $540,000 program to clean up illegal dumpsites in Pike, Potter, Susquehanna and Wayne counties, as well as paying $50,000 in recovery funds to four conservation districts and the department.

ATLANTA — Federal authorities say an Atlanta airline employee is suspected of helping smuggle firearms to New York City on passenger jets.FBI spokesman Stephen Emmett said Monday that Delta baggage handler Eugene Harvey was arrested by federal agents without trouble.An FBI affidavit says Mark Quentin Henry, a former Delta employee who was fired in 2010, was arrested in New York on Dec. 10 in a gun trafficking investigation after an undercover agent bought a gun from one of his accomplices.Authorities investigated Henry's cell phone, airport surveillance video and security records and determined that he conspired with Harvey to get the firearms past security.
