Crash kills Armstrong County man

BURRELL TWP, Armstrong County — A Ford City man was killed early this morning in a rollover wreck south of Kittanning, authorities said.

State police suspect 46-year-old Robert P. Sweet Jr., had been drinking and was speeding about 12:10 a.m. when he lost control of his 1998 Ford Expedition on Cochran’s Mills Road near Route 292 in Burrell Township.

The eastbound sport utility vehicle traveled off the north berm and struck a tree stump. Sweet apparently tried to get the vehicle back onto the road but he overcompensated, police said.

Sweet was thrown through the windshield as the vehicle overturned two times and slid before coming to a stop. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.

Armstrong County Coroner Brian Myers pronounced Sweet dead at the scene. He died of severe injuries to his head, chest and abdomen.

Ford City Hose Company No. 1 assisted police with traffic control. The road was closed for about 2½ hours.
