Harmony tax rate stays same
HARMONY — Borough council Tuesday night approved the 2015 borough budget with no tax increase.
The budget is $551,620.
Residents will have a property tax rate of 11.085 mills and 1.125 for fire service.
The biggest costs are salaries, benefits and expenses for the streets department and borough water plant. It also pays $30,000 for police services from Zelienople and $30,000 for solicitor services.
Even though the Zelienople Public Library asked council not to cut the library’s funding, council went ahead with the originally proposed donation of $500. The library had received an annual donation of $5,200 from the borough.
Council member Don Sims had defended the cut at previous meetings, saying that the borough should consider an additional donation later in the year, but only if it had the money to spare after its road projects.
Those projects the borough is planning include correcting drainage issues on Main Street and widening and elevating Wood Street.
Depending on cost of the work, council member Don Sims said he would also like to add two parking spaces for the Wood Street Park.
Visitors to the creek-side park now park on the grass, but adding actual parking spaces would make it more accessible.
“It’s in a unique location and it’s a shame we haven’t found a way to utilize it better,” Sims said.
Council will pick a new president and vice president at its Jan. 6 meeting. Former President Jim Hulings resigned in November, leaving a need for new leadership.
Council on Dec. 2 appointed Jason Sarver to replace Hulings, and Greg Such has been serving as acting president in the meantime.
