A lot has changed during the past half century, but Paul Rock has remained consistent.

Rock was honored Friday for 50 years of federal service. He has been at the Butler Post Office since 1968.

He started with the federal government in 1964 by joining the U.S. Navy after graduating from Butler High School. After serving four years, he immediately started at the post office in Butler.

“I've been here ever since,” said Rock, who declined to give his age.

At the time, the post office was at North Washington and Jefferson Streets. It moved to its current South Main Street location in 1970.

Over the years, he has seen a great increase in automation.

“When I first started, everything was by hand,” Rock said.

In recent years, he also has seen an increase in the number of packages being delivered due to online orders.

Rock has been delivering in the greater Butler area since he started. If someone has lived in Butler, Butler Township or Center Township over the years, he has likely delivered to them.

“I've gone through three generations of family,” Rock said.

Currently, he delivers along Route 8 in Center Township.

Right now he is not considering retirement.

“I may think about it in a couple of years,” Rock said.

He said that the customers he serves are what keep him going.

“They appreciate the service,” Rock said.

As an example, he showed a can of Pepsi and a thank-you note that a customer recently gave him. Rock noted that he did not give this customer any special treatment. He said the customers appreciate good service and consistency.

“That's what makes it worthwhile,” Rock said.

Friday morning, Rock was honored with a plaque and a 50-year service pin.

Rock lives in Butler Township with his wife. They have one son.
