Sing Hosanna! makes 'Tarzan' visit positive

Show offers family fun

BUTLER TWP — Sing Hosanna’s production of “Tarzan” is quite the ambitious undertaking.

The costumes for the gorillas were simply amazing, unique, eye catching and quite an investment of time and money to create.

With a cast of more than 60, this production at the Succop Theatre at Butler County Community College spared no expense.

The show opened with a big bold note and the momentum continued until the final chest pound. While the actual dialogue fell short, I believe the talent and the music by Phil Collins more than made up for the writer’s triteness.

Maternal instincts were out in full force for Alisha Stephenson who played Kala, the mother to Tarzan. Her voice was lovely and shown in “You’ll Be in My Heart ” during the first scene. She capably portrayed the internal struggle between her leader and her “son.”

The tension between her and Kerchak, played by Don Hixon, was palpable. His vocals were strong and demanding as was the demeanor of his character. He was believable as the head of the family.

They were all propelled into their roles by the lithe and pouncing leopard played by Evie Fox, who tossed and tumbled her way through the families wreaking havoc with each pounce. Her fearless antics, grace, speed and strength made her perfect for this role.

I enjoyed the chemistry between Young Terk and Young Tarzan played by Abbey Schandelmeier and Than Archer. They were cute together and delightful in their “Who Better than Me” number which explored the ways they could partner up and help each other through life.

Schandelmeier has a nice big full voice and her sense of rhythm was fun to watch as well. Archer is still maturing and he seemed confident in the role.

Adult Terk and Adult Tarzan played by Matt Nocera and Nathan Rockcastle make their appearance shortly before the end of the first act. The duo is fun and quirky and seem to share a believable bond. Their jungle clearing number which featured “Son of Man” was a nice ensemble number which showcased the talent well.

Enter Jane, Jordan Luntz, to mix it all up. Her predictable professionalism did not disappoint.

She sported a lovely accent and a dress that made me think of the man with the tall hat in Curious George. Her energy and passion came through and her voice was steady and clear as always.

“For the First Time” was a delightful number between her and Tarzan. They both adapted to the flying quite well and did not appear to be distracted by being suspended in midair while singing.

Director Ralph Christy Jr. was excited about bringing this new and challenging Broadway production to Butler and he faced the challenges head on. The show is expertly cast with fun choreography. The actors truly grasped the look and feel and mannerisms of the primates they portrayed.

I would say that Tarzan’s first visit to Butler was a success.

The show is a toe tapping feel good event for the whole family.
