Only 4 grid teams standing
Well, well, well.
Isn’t this interesting.
There are four area high school football teams still alive.
And they may all be playing for awhile.
That bodes well for high school football in the Butler County area, but also for yours truly as I chase 110 wins.
I was a perfect 5-0 last week to run my season record to 103-20. It’s my highest winning percentage of any season in which I have been prognosticating.
This week, I like all four area teams to come home with wins: Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, Karns City, Union and Slippery Rock.
On to the picks:
Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 31, Avonworth 11 — These two teams will have played four times in two years once this game is all said and done.
Avonworth has three losses in the last two seasons — all three at the hands of North Catholic.
So, yeah, these two teams are familiar with each other.
In the first meeting this season, the teams played to a 0-0 stalemate in the first half before the Trojans pulled away for a 28-0 win.
Cardinal Wuerl is just too strong, too deep and too explosive to think Avonworth can pull off an upset here.
The march to Heinz Field will be complete.
Karns City 43, St. Marys 8 — The Flying Dutch have been seriously grounded by Karns City in recent history.
Last year, the Gremlins beat St. Marys, 42-0, in the season opener at Karns City and then routed the Dutch, 55-6, in the playoffs, also at Karns City.
This year the Gremlins routed the Dutch again, 42-0.
That’s 139-6 in the last three meetings.
This game will be played at Clarion University, but I imagine the outcome will be very similar to those of last season.
Union 21, Brockway 20 — The feel-good story of the season are the Golden Knights, who sat at 2-5 after a Week 7 loss to Clarion.
But since, Union has rolled off four consecutive wins, including two against Ridgway, the latest an 18-14 win in the playoffs Friday.
Now the Golden Knights get Brockway, another 6-5 team and one that lost to Ridgway.
To me, that gives Union the slight edge Saturday afternoon in DuBois.
Slippery Rock 18, Hickory 13 — In another playoff rematch, the Rockets will take on the Hornets at Slippery Rock University Saturday night.
In the first meeting at the Rockets’ newly minted stadium, Slippery Rock edged Hickory 14-7.
It could very well be another defensive struggle between these two teams.
Hickory is the three-time defending District 10 Class AA champion. This is Slippery Rock’s first season back in Class AA.
The Rockets’ offense gets all the buzz, but their defense is one of the best around.
It will secure Slippery Rock a trip to the district title game and will unseat the Hornets.
Scoop would have a mediocre record if he had to predict the outcome of Steelers’ games this season.
