Butler man, 39, charged with drug trafficking

He is accused of selling heroin

County drug officers Monday charged a suspected heroin dealer following a search of his home in Butler last week.

Investigators charged David L. Caldwell Jr., 39, with drug trafficking after seizing his cell phone and finding “dozens of texts talking about heroin transactions,” according to court documents.

The Butler County Drug Task Force began investigating the case after a probation home check Nov. 5 turned up drugs and other contraband at Caldwell’s St. Paul Street house, which he shares with his girlfriend, 24-year-old Mallory Ann Bole, and the couple’s 3-year-old son.

Both suspects and their child were home.

County Detective Tim Fennell, who heads the task force, was notified and searched the house, finding suspected heroin and an unknown substance to cut the drug, digital scales and packaging materials, documents said.

Caldwell admitted the drugs belonged to him. However, he claimed they were for his personal use, not for sale.

Fennell disputed that, noting the scales and other contraband suggested the defendant was selling heroin.

Bole, meanwhile, admitted that she “was aware of the drugs” and “of sales due to the number of people coming and going, with sometimes as many as five people there at once,” documents said.

The task force on Nov. 6 obtained a search warrant to inspect Caldwell’s cell phone.

The examination revealed numerous suspected drug deals, Fennell said.

The Butler County Children and Youth Services agency was contacted and took custody of the couple’s child.

Caldwell is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, a felony, and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.

He and Bole also are charged with child endangerment, a misdemeanor. Additionally, Bole is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Caldwell is being held in the Butler County Prison for a probation violation.
