Zelie, telecom company agree to deal

Phone devices to be installed

ZELIENOPLE — Borough council and Crown Castle on Monday agreed to a contract that will allow for the installation of three devices to boost cell phone signals.

Representatives of the telecommunications company originally proposed the network node devices be attached to utility poles on Main Street, though officials were concerned that they would be eyesores.

Having the devices will not cost the borough and will improve signal strength for wireless users, particularly around Main Street.

Paul Gilbert of Crown Castle said he visited the sites with borough employees to look at possible locations to have the equipment placed on the ground and connected to an antenna mounted on a pole.

After their discussions, he proposed that the equipment cabinets be installed between the curb and sidewalk near the intersection of Main Street and New Castle Street and in front of the 7-Eleven store on Main Street.

The ground-mounted cabinets will measure 4 feet high, 4 feet wide and 22 inches deep and will be painted white.

A third unit will be mounted on a pole south of the Main Street intersection with Culvert Street.

At the suggestion of Councilman Greg Semel, the contract terms were altered to be only five years and to allow the borough to void the arrangement if the equipment can no longer be used if the borough changes its streetscape with the Main Street revitalization project.

Joe Blake of Crown Castle said the installation would take no more than a week, and the company hopes to do the work the first week of December.
