Mom Con offers support, advice next weekend

CRANBERRY TWP — The second annual Mom Con next weekend will offer support, advice, networking and a bit of pampering to mothers.

Natalie Kovacic, founder of the event, said Mom Con will have a kickoff party at 6 p.m. Friday at the Pittsburgh Marriott North. The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 15.

Kovacic said the conference is aimed at young mothers who may feel isolated or who miss participating in an intellectual, creative, adult life as they rear their youngsters.

“It was a rough transition for me,” Kovacic said of unexpectedly becoming a mother after graduating from law school at age 26. “I felt very isolated. I went to play groups, but it just felt like you were running after kids.”

She decided to invite all Pittsburgh area mothers to a conference that would offer speakers and information, but mainly it would connect mothers to one another.

The first Mom Con, held last year in Green Tree, attracted about 60 mothers.

This year’s event has about 175 mothers expected to attend.

It will include 14 speakers who will offer their expertise and advice. Spas and other businesses will offer services to the mothers who attend, and a lunch will be held.

Kovacic hopes those who attend will gain new mentors and friends, ideas on where to go and what to do next, a fresh perspective, and creative ideas for their life at work or home.

One of the event’s speakers is Amanda Jordan, a chiropractor at Jordan Family Chiropractic in Cranberry Township.

Jordan said her workshop is titled “What is health?,” which is meant to encourage mothers to adopt a healthier lifestyle through optimal function of the body, food, and fitness, and to make good financial choices.

“You cannot have a future if you don’t have your health,” Jordan said.

She is pleased to participate in Mom Con because her passion is to lead families toward good health.

“If you can get through to a mom, you can change a family,” Jordan said. “Moms are the key to how we live.”

Nicole Mildren of Sarver is a business owner, parenthood blogger, and co-founder of Mom Con. She said mothers who attend will meet others on the same level.

“For moms, this is really going to help them build a community,” Mildren said.

She said a major purpose is to get moms away from social media parenting groups and into chairs across from one another.

“Moms are sometimes afraid to reach out to other people because they fear they are going to be judged,” Mildren said.
