CRANBERRY TWP — Nearly $2,000 in donations came in to the Cranberry Township Community Chest’s 2015 Project of the Year this week, bringing the total to $283,017.

Officials have a goal of more than $500,000 for the project, which is an initiative to recruit and retain more volunteer firefighters in Butler County.

Bruce Mazzoni, treasurer of the Community Chest, said, “We still have a long way to go to attain our goal, but so far so good.”

Mazzoni said a solid core of volunteers has been helping spread the word with mailings, fliers and other promotional materials.

Mazzoni said that the Community Chest still is looking for corporate partnerships with the project.

“We’re in decent shape, but we’re always looking for people who can help us reach out to companies to solicit support,” Mazzoni said. “Everyone who has stepped up so far in that regard has been successful.”

The money raised will go to buy a $130,000 emergency trailer for recruitment, training and educational purposes.

The rest will go to establishing 20 scholarships at Butler County Community College. Anyone who pledges two years of service to a volunteer fire department will be eligible for those scholarships.
