2 events boost Mars Library
MARS — A pair of events this month will offer fun activities and raise money for the Mars Library.
Librarian Vince Gadrix said Bark for Books will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Adams Township Community Park, and the Autumn Wine and Brew Fest will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 25 at The Cider House in the Treesdale housing development.
The inaugural Wine and Brew Fest will feature creations from Deer Creek Winery and North Country Brewing in addition to hors’ d’oeuvres.
Gadrix said a string quartet will play classical music as revelers mingle.
“We did this at a previous library where I worked and it was always a successful event, so we wanted to give it a try here,” he said.
A silent auction will be held with 14 gift baskets available for bidding. Gadrix said fall theme, handyman starter kit, a handmade bedspread and sheets, and wine for two are some of the basket themes.
“It’s a nice event where people can come and socialize, have a drink and meet other library supporters,” Gadrix said.
Basket prizes were donated by local businesses and library supporters.
Gadrix said he has 90 reservations so far, and hopes 120 to 130 people come to enjoy the event.
Bark for Books will be held for the second time, and Gadrix hopes the weather cooperates a bit better than it did last year.
“It was really a terrible day,” he said of the cold, wet weather last October.
The event sees residents and their dogs make their way around the 1.3-mile walking trail at the park, which is on Valencia Road near the municipal building.
Ruth Wilson, the Friends of the Mars Library volunteer who coordinates the event, said most people dress their dogs in Halloween costumes.
Prizes are given for first, second and third place costumed dogs. The prizes are being provided by local businesses.
“Last year, one larger dog was dressed like a cheerleader,” Wilson said. “It was really so cute.”
After the walk, participants can grab hot dogs at the Rotary and township pavilions.
Wilson said used blankets, quilts and towels will be collected for the Butler County Humane Society, which will have representatives at the event to share information.
Each participating dog will receive a backpack containing treats and other canine goodies.
Cost for the Autumn Wine and Brew Fest is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets can be bought at the library on Grand Avenue.
The registration fee for Bark for Books is $20 for one dog, and $5 for each additional dog. Registration is at the library. A list of rules apply regarding dog behavior, vaccination requirements, and other stipulations.
Proceeds benefit the library.
