Postseason drama isn't a sure thing

Approaching Week 7 of the high school football season, projecting who will meet in the district finals looks to be easy.

Almost too easy, in the case of District 9 and the WPIAL.

If things play out like they do on paper, and chances are in some classes they will, there may not be much drama in the postseason.

Much of the drama will come from who is able to earn a berth late.

Knoch and Union are both 2-4 and could sneak into the playoffs with strong finishes.

Who can contend for a district title is another story.

Slippery Rock, which is in District 10, looks to be locked into a wide-open Class AA battle that will be filled with much drama.

Consider that the Rockets beat Hickory and Greenville 14-7.

Greenville proceeded to beat Hickory 13-10.

That’s just one region in District 10.

Compare that to Class AA in District 9, which will most likely only have three teams enter the playoffs.

Karns City — the deservedly heavy favorite — will most likely play the winner of a St. Marys-Moniteau semifinal.

The Gremlins beat both teams already this season by heavy margins.

Karns City took care of Moniteau 48-6 and St. Marys 42-0.

Flip over to the Class AA in the WPIAL and it appears South Fayette and Aliquippa are headed for another meeting in the WPIAL finals.

The Lions, who are the defending state champions, beat the Quips in 2010 and 2013.

Should Karns City make the quarterfinals, it would likely run into one of those two teams.

Single A in the WPIAL also looks like another obvious finals pairing between defending champ Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic and Clairton.

The Bears have beaten teams by an average score of 72-5.

Jeannette, a team that was supposed to challenge Clairton last week, was humbled 58-14.

The Trojans have outscored its opponents by an average score of 50-11.

Before North Catholic won last season, Clairton had won six of the last seven WPIAL titles.

Triple A in the WPIAL will most like boil down to two teams from the Parkway Conference, possibly Central Valley (6-0) and West Allegheny (6-0).

The last time a team from the Parkway Conference didn’t win the WPIAL title was when Franklin Regional won in 2005.

Quad A is a bit more of a toss-up, with Pittsburgh Central Catholic, Pine-Richland, Woodland Hills and Penn-Trafford all undefeated.

Will there be some surprises?

Most likely.

Just no major ones at the top.
