Woman killed in fall is identified

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — Authorities have released the name of the Butler County woman killed Wednesday evening when she fell near Breakneck Bridge at McConnells Mill State Park in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County.

Cheryl Goebel, 58, of Cranberry Township died in the 20-foot fall. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

It turned out that Goebel died on her birthday, said Dustin Drew, park manager.

“It was a very unfortunate accident,” Drew said.

The Lawrence County Coroner’s office said that an autopsy was to be done Thursday afternoon. A telephone call to Coroner Russell Noga was not returned this morning.

Goebel was with her husband, Ronald Goebel, sight seeing at the park about 7 p.m. when she dropped her camera while standing on the bridge that spans Cheeseman Run.

Park officials said that she climbed over the bridge railing and onto a rocky ledge to get the camera and then she fell.

Portersville EMS and Slippery Rock Township Volunteer Fire Department were called to assist park rangers. Rescuers did cardiopulmonary resuscitation but were unable to revive Goebel.

Firefighters used ropes and a Stokes basket to extract Goebel’s body out of the gorge.

Drew said the investigation is waiting on the autopsy report and is nearly complete. He said there is nothing suspicious about the death.
