Woman takes fatal fall at park

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — A Butler County woman’s fall foliage viewing trip turned tragic Wednesday evening when she fell to her death at McConnells Mill State Park, authorities said

The 58-year-old Cranberry Township woman was trying to retrieve the camera she dropped while on the Breakneck Bridge about 7 p.m. when she fell about 20 feet, said park supervisor Bryan Moore.

Investigators this morning said they are waiting to inform the woman’s entire family before releasing her name.

Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Sam Teolis pronounced her dead about 9 p.m. He said the cause of death is pending an autopsy set for this afternoon.

“This was a tragic accident,” Teolis said. “It’s a shame.”

The woman was with her husband sightseeing at the park when she climbed over the bridge railing to try and get her camera.

“She went off the bridge and onto a ledge and fell,” Moore said.

The woman’s husband was nearby and heard — but did not see — his wife fall.

He flagged down a passer-by, who called for help. Park rangers, Slippery Rock volunteer firefighters and Portersville EMS responded.

Moore said the accident should serve as a reminder to all park visitors to stay on designated roads and trails.
