District to use temp service
JEFFERSON TWP — Substitute employees at the South Butler School District will be considered Kelly Services employees this month.
The school board earlier this year approved the use of the company to schedule substitute teachers, custodial workers and other employees. Kelly Services, with its headquarters in Troy, Mich., will provide scheduling, training and payrolls for these employees.
Jason Davidek, district spokesman, said the district is transitioning into the new system, with full implementation expected this month.
“One of the advantages was when you use the service, it allows you to have access to a larger pool of substitutes,” Davidek said.
The transition has been pretty seamless, he said, because the school district and Kelly Services use the same software, called Aesop. It’s an online-based platform that tracks availability and sends automated notifications for opportunities to work.
There are about 110 substitute employees in the pool, 90 of those employees being teachers. That pool will expand as more people in the Kelly Services system opt into working in the district.
The district has had problems with finding custodial substitutes in the past.
South Butler is the first school district in Butler County to use Kelly Services for temporary staffing, but among 22 school districts in the Pittsburgh area that do so.
David Stieving, a regional sales manager at the Pittsburgh office of Kelly Services, said school districts in Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence counties use the service.
They’re considering more options in the Butler County area, he said.
School districts use Kelly Services because of a cost savings, and how inclusive of a program it is. Substitutes are provided with health care and 401K options, and training.
The service also allows districts to choose from a larger pool of applicants.
Nationally, Kelly Services serves more than 4,200 school districts in 35 states. The group also facilitates temporary employment in other fields, including commercial and technical work.
