Electronic device policies to be revised at Moniteau

Use by students would be OK'd

CHERRY TWP — The Moniteau School Board on Monday night had the first reading of revised policies for student use of their own electronic devices in schools.

Students are not allowed to use their devices at school now but the installation of districtwide wireless technology over the summer could make “bring your own technology” more desirable.

Superintendent George Svolos said the policy changes will be for electronic devices and for computers and technology and their acceptable use.

New policies could be in effect as early as the end of October, he said.

Policy committee member Trixie Heck expects the policies to start with grades 7 to 12.

“It’s a very long process,” Heck said.

“Students and personnel will be given access to the school’s WIFI with individual addresses,” Heck said. “But the school will be able to monitor access, if and when the policies pass. There is a waiver and consent that must be signed by a parent or guardian before getting an account.”

In other action:

Svolos announced that an anonymous donor will give $1,100 to pay for the cost of adding the school name and logo to two new scoreboards planned for the school gymnasium.

The total cost of the scoreboards, shipping, installation and the Moniteau name is $11,800.

Svolos said the scoreboards may be installed in November.

The district will receive $102,859 in a state Ready to Learn Block Grant and $125,328 in a state Accountability Block Grant for 2014-15.

The grants will support pre-kindergarten, full-day kindergarten and other educational programs.

Dassa McKinney Elementary School principal, Brenda Knoll, staff members and board members are working together to use the grants for extended learning programs including additional instruction before, during and after school and other activities to improve student achievement.
