Cell zoning update

Cranberry deals with antennas

CRANBERRY TWP — A telecommunications company wants to install new cellular antennas in Cranberry, but the township supervisors are updating a zoning ordinance to make sure the process is done correctly.

Cranberry manager Jerry Andree said at a township meeting Tuesday night that Crown Castle Communications, a subcontractor for Verizon, wants to install four or five of these new antennas that will expand bandwidth for cellular customers.

The antennas are smaller devices that would be on public rights-of-way, private property or township-owned land. They are different from larger cellular towers currently in use, although they will still be noticeable to residents.

Andree said the township is in preliminary talks to put two of the antennas in North Boundary Park.

Andree said the cellular industry is “exploding with growth” with these new distributive antenna systems, or DNAs, and the supervisors want to be proactive on the issue.

“We’re trying to address this growing movement with the antennas without negatively impacting our community,” Andree said. “They’re popping up all over the place and causing an uproar in other communities.”

Andree said the negotiations with the telecommunications company have been “nonconfrontational.” But that doesn’t mean the township is letting the company have free reign on where it wants to put the antennas.

“They thought they had the right to come in and do whatever they wanted, and we had to say no to that,” Andree said. “People might begin to spot these around the township, but they will be under a very controlled format.”

The ordinance is expected to address where companies can put the antenna systems, and it will establish other protocol for dealing with telecommunication companies.

The supervisors are expected to vote on the ordinance on Oct. 2.
