Pgh. man killed in car crash
WORTH TWP, Mercer County — Speed was a suspected factor in a weekend crash that killed a 24-year-old Pittsburgh man just north of the Butler County line, state police said.
Philip Richard Gross III died early Saturday morning in the wreck on Route 965.
Gross was traveling east about 1:40 a.m. when he lost control of his car in an “S curve,” said police Lt. Eric Hermick. The car veered off the road just west of Route 173 and slammed into two large trees.
Mercer County Deputy Coroner Robert Snyder pronounced Gross dead at 2:47 a.m. He died of severe body injuries.
Police suspect he was speeding when he lost control of the car. He also was not wearing a seat belt.
