Tennis court upgrade sought
CRANBERRY TWP — The board of supervisors at a meeting Wednesday night listened to a proposal to renovate the four existing tennis courts in Community Park, a project that also would add a fifth court to the facility.
Pete Geis, director of the parks and recreation department, said “one of the strongest-voiced concerns” to his department recently has been the renovation of the current courts.
“When the tennis courts were built, they satisfied the need of the community at its population size,” he said. “Since that time our population has tripled and the interest in tennis has grown and these courts were nearing their life span.”
Manager Jerry Andree said the project will be paid for using money the township expects to receive from the sale of a small plot of land next to Community Park.
Although the sale of that land hasn’t yet been finalized, Andree said the township expects to get about $127,000.
The cash from the sale will go toward repairing the surface of the existing courts, adding a fifth court and enhancing the lighting at the facility with “safer and more efficient” lights, Geis said.
Geis added that work will begin on the courts in September and will be finished by spring.
Andree added that the project was a no-brainer given the constant input from residents regarding recreational opportunities.
“This shows the board is responsive to the continuing demands for recreational facilities,” Andree said. “It helps that we’re selling a piece of property and that money is going right back into the park.”
