2 arrested in salvage yard robbery
FINDLEY TWP, Mercer County — Two men tied to the robbery of a township business Tuesday have been arrested, but police are still searching for two other men believed to be involved.
Nathan Haynes, 36, of Youngstown, Ohio, and Robert D. Butch, 29, of Mercer each face felony charges following the armed robbery at Butch’s Auto Salvage on Mercer-Grove City Road in Findley Township.
State police in Mercer responded to the salvage yard Tuesday morning and found business owner Gary L. Butch, 58, had been assaulted and robbed about 6:15 a.m. while he was trying to open the business.
He was taken to the Grove City Medical Center for treatment.
The criminal complaint for Robert Butch said that he received a dozen phone calls from a man named Carl Hammonds that morning asking for money. During one of the calls, Butch provided the address of the auto parts store, which was also the home of Gary Butch. The complaint did not state the relationship between Gary Butch and Robert Butch.
After the calls, Robert Butch woke up his girlfriend and told her they needed to leave because Hammonds and other men were coming and they’d be killed if still there.
At about 6:10 a.m. Gary Butch went downstairs from his second floor home at the address to open the business.
After unlocking the doors he heard someone say not to move. He turned around and saw two black males pointing a semi-automatic firearm at him, according to court documents. One of the men later was identified as Haynes.
One of the men got behind him and struck him in the head twice with the gun.
The men forced him into the business’ office and told him to open the safe. Butch said he didn’t know the combination and was knocked to the ground and kicked by the two men.
One man threatened to shoot him. Butch said his wife had the combination and that he’d call her, adding she was not in the home upstairs.
While this was happening, one of the men heard someone approaching and they fled and entered a black SUV.
A few minutes later an officer with the Grove City Police Department witnessed the vehicle on Route 58 and initiated a traffic stop by turning on his siren.
The SUV did not stop and turned onto a side street, where the occupants fled on foot.
The officer was able to catch up to Haynes shortly after 7 a.m. on Grove City College’s campus. At that time Haynes told the officer, “He owed me money.”
More than $550 was found in the man’s front pocket.
Robert Butch was arrested later that day.
State police Wednesday morning said two men were arrested in connection with the assault and that they were investigating additional suspects involved. Police did not provide any additional information on the case.
Haynes faces felony aggravated assault, felony robbery while inflicting serious bodily injury charges, as well as charges for theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, simple assault, and fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, according to court documents.
He was placed in Mercer County Prison on $250,000 bail.
Butch was charged with conspiracy of burglary, robbery inflicting threat of immediate bodily injury, and conspiracy/theft by unlawful taking.
He was placed in Mercer County Prison on $100,000 bail.
The criminal complaints for Haynes and Robert Butch stated police are searching for Carl Hammonds and an unknown black male.
The incident led to Grove City College being locked down from about 7 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.
Classes were canceled until 11:30 a.m. The opening convocation of the school year was postponed until Thursday.
Haynes and Robert Butch have preliminary hearings before Judge D. Neil McEwen scheduled for Sept. 3.
