Mars Foundation to hold golf fundraiser on Friday

ADAMS TWP — The Mars Planet Foundation will have its second annual golf outing fundraiser on Friday.

Wyatt Lee, vice president of the foundation, said the event will be held at 1 p.m. at Rittswood Golf Club on Route 8 in Penn Township.

The outing helps fund educational programs in the Mars School District that the foundation supports each year. Those programs include student scholarships, the geography bee at the middle school, the high school’s academic banquet and trip to Wallops Island in Virginia, the Read Across America storytellers at the elementary schools, and other projects and programs the district does not include in its budget.

Last year’s inaugural outing attracted 23 foursomes and sponsorships by businesses. It brought in $11,664.

Lee said the success of the event is commensurate with the community’s priorities.

“The people in this community understand the value we’re providing to the students at the Mars School District,” Lee said. “That’s what it’s all about.”

He said the cost to play has been increased this year to provide more funds to the foundation. Each of the 20 foursomes signed up will pay $300.

“We just wanted to be able to raise more money for the students,” Lee said. “We’re still lower than most golf outings out there.”

School board President Dayle Ferguson said, “The Mars Planet Foundation Golf Outing captures the generous spirit of the community. From our dedicated volunteers to our supportive sponsors to our enthusiastic participants, this annual event provides a fun opportunity to rally around our school district and its educational programs.”
