City man receives jail time in arson case at apartment
One of two men who reportedly ignited the door of a city apartment in October was sentenced Thursday for felony arson.
Matthew A. Wolfe, 31, of West Brady Street will spend 3 to 6 months in the Butler County Prison, followed by 2 years probation.
Court records allege Wolfe and Jason L. Roberts, 28, set an apartment door at 313 W. Jefferson St. on fire at about 3 a.m. A woman who lived there reportedly owed Roberts $20.
A different resident awoke and extinguished the fire before firefighters arrived, according to court records.
Police allegedly identified the arsonists because they had purchased $2 worth of gas at a nearby gas station about 2:46 a.m.
When questioned, both men allegedly acknowledged the crime, according to court records.
Wolfe, who pleaded guilty to arson, was sentenced Thursday by Butler County Judge Timothy McCune.
In addition to the prison time, Wolfe was ordered to log 50 hours of community service and pay $100 in fines and $975 in restitution.
In court, Wolfe told the judge that since this incident, he has been trying to better himself by getting a job, supporting his children and avoiding problem people.
The case against Roberts still is pending in Butler County Court.
