CUP raises more than $100,000

Hundreds come out in support

CRANBERRY TWP — The Cranberry CUP went off without a hitch this past weekend while hundreds of people came out to support a family in need.

The annual softball tournament and race raised more than $100,000 for the “inspirational family,” according to Cathy Cortazzo, president of the CUP.

This year’s family is the Koliscaks, whose patriarch Jason, 38, has inoperable bile duct cancer. The CUP, which stands for Community Uniting People, also will benefit Jason’s wife, Melanie, and their three daughters, Addison, 6, Alexis, 4, and Lanie, 3.

“It was fabulous,” Cortazzo said about the weekend. “The opening ceremony was perfect and very, very touching.”

The weekend kicked off with a party Friday night at the Cranberry Highlands Golf Course that was attended by more than 650 people, Cortazzo said.

A 5K race in Community Park on Saturday morning attracted more than 200 people, which was double the attendance from the previous year.

Benjamin Gardner of Cranberry won the men’s division with a time of 17 minutes, 16 seconds while Jennifer Bole won the woman’s division in 19 minutes, 11 seconds.

In addition, the team called The Crossings won the neighborhood division of the softball tournament while business Monticellos won the open division.

Cortazzo said she was again amazed at the community’s response to the CUP, and noted so many people came together for a great cause.

“I’ve gotten so many positive comments about how people love the CUP and all of the comments have been very touching,” she said.

“A lot of other neighborhoods have been congratulating The Crossings on winning, too, which shows how much the community spirit is alive here.”
