Storm causes woes

Flooding leads to closed roads

Monday night’s downpour flooded roads and basements in the Butler area.

The Butler County 911 dispatch center received 56 weather-related calls from 9:56 p.m. Monday through 6:15 a.m. today.

Two roads, Sawmill Run Road in Butler Township and Old East Butler Road in Oakland Township, were reported closed this morning. Sawmill Run sustained some damage by water washing out a portion of the edge near a guardrail.

Meteorologist Joe Palko of the National Weather Service said 2.23 inches of rainfall hit Connoquenessing, 1.38 inches fell in Harmony and 0.96 inches fell in Portersville.

“Anytime you get two inches of rain in a short amount of time, the drainage can’t handle it,” Palko said.

The depth of Connoquenessing Creek rose from 2½ feet to 7 feet by 8 this morning.

“That’s a big rise,” Palko said.

Downed trees and power lines also affected motorists. A fallen tree clogged Cruikshank Road in Middlesex Township.

A car was stuck on an inundated Powder Mill Road in Connoquenessing Township. The driver made it out of the vehicle before emergency services were notified.

Meridian Road headed down into Renfrew in Penn Township was flooded by 11 p.m.

Other roads reported flooded were West Jefferson Road in Jefferson Township, Denny Road in Adams Township, Moose Road in Connoquenessing Township and Kittanning Pike in Parker Township.

Flooded basements were reported mainly in Butler and Connoquenessing townships.

Palko said more flooding could occur tonight.

The weather service forecasts rainfall between a quarter and a half of an inch for tonight. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Wednesday’s forecast calls for rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch mainly before 3 p.m. Chance of precitation is 70 percent.
