Pirates select prep shortstop
The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Cole Tucker, a high school shortstop from Arizona, with the 24th overall pick in Thursday’s amateur draft.
Tucker, 17, attended Mountain Pointe High School. The 6-foot-3, 165-pound switch-hitter batted .404 this season with 13 stolen bases and 30 RBI.
He is committed to the University of Arizona, but was drafted earlier than expected. Most draft analysts had Tucker rated on the low side of the nation’s top prospects.
The Pirates made three other selections Thursday.
Connor Joe, a first baseman-outfielder-catcher from the University of San Diego, was chosen at No. 39. He hit .367 with nine homers and 51 RBI this year.
Two high school right-handed pitchers — Mitch Keller from Xavier in Iowa and Trey Supak from LaGrange in Texas — were selected at No.’s 64 and 73.
