WOBURN, Mass. — The son of longtime Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder for fatally stabbing his girlfriend last year while the couple's 4-year-old daughter screamed and three neighbors tried to stop him.

Jared Remy, 35, was sentenced to a mandatory life without parole for killing Jennifer Martel, 27.

Remy admitted he killed Martel on Aug. 15 at their Waltham apartment and said he wanted to take responsibility for what he had done.

His father, a former Red Sox second baseman who has been a color analyst on team broadcasts on the New England Sports Network since 1988, was not in court. Remy's lawyer, Edward Ryan Jr., said Remy had asked his parents not to attend the hearing.

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation Tuesday to raise the state's minimum wage by 25 percent gradually over the next four years to $9.25 an hour, as Republicans controlling the state government moved to head off a November ballot measure that could have raised pay even more.The House and Senate passed the bill Tuesday, one day before a group of labor and community organizers planned to submit hundreds of thousands of petition signatures calling for a Michigan ballot initiative to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.

LOS ANGELES — Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan whose beating at Dodgers Stadium became a symbol of violence associated with sports events, sat in a specially equipped wheelchair as prospective jurors heard lawyers give brief summaries of the civil suit brought for the brain-damaged man.Stow, a paramedic from Northern California, will never be able to work again, his lawyer said, and it was unclear how much of the statements made on Tuesday were understood by him. His attorney, Tom Girardi, has said that Stow will not be able to testify in the trial. He was accompanied to court by a group of family members.Stow, 45, returned home last spring after two years in rehabilitation centers and hospitals. Girardi said he requires constant care. He has estimated that Stowe's lifetime care could cost $50 million.
