Finding success at states

SHIPPENSBURG — It was a pretty good Saturday for a pair of Butler County throwers and a jumper.

It was also a fine Saturday for a sprinter and a relay team.

Slippery Rock senior Emily Campbell, coming off a state title in the Class AA discus, placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 10¼ inches at the PIAA Track and Field Championships over Memorial Day weekend.

Knoch freshman Jordan Geist also earned his second medal of the championships with a third-place finish in the Class AAA shot with a toss of 57-7.

Geist placed fifth Friday in the discus.

Mars’ Sonny Zangaro was fourth in the Class AAA boys high jump, clearing 6-6.

Karns City’s Logan Moroney placed sixth in the Class AA boys 200 with a time of 22.63 seconds.

The Seneca Valley 3,200-meter relay team of Mike Kolor, Tanner Quiggle, Bryce Benjamin and Brett Foster placed eighth, but their time of 7 minutes, 51.13 seconds was a school record and a national honor roll time.

Other local athletes who competed, but did not medal were: Zoe Pawlak of Freeport, 13th in the AA girls javelin (116-01); Hailey Hall of Grove City, 12th in the AAA pole vault (11-0); Brendan Stamm of Moniteau, 19th in the boys AA discus (125-8); Angela Mignanelli of Seneca Valley, 17th in the girls AAA 3,200 (11:17.95); Ryan Budnik of Grove City, 26th in the boys AAA 3,200 (9:57.55); and Foster of Seneca Valley, 10th in the boys AAA 800 (1:54.95).
