Her eyes stay on the prize
SLIPPERY ROCK — Emily Campbell walks upstairs to find out how many times she set a school record this year.
On the refrigerator, Campbell put up a meet schedule to scribble down her distances.
With how many times the Slippery Rock senior has thrown a personal record this season, it's hard to keep track.
Six is the count so far.
“I started doing it after indoor season,” Campbell said. “It keeps my head to where I need to go and what I need to accomplish.”
Like several other area athletes, Campbell will look for redemption at the PIAA state track and field championships Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University. Campbell, a Wake Forest recruit, missed making the finals in the discus by one inch.
Campbell is the top-seeded thrower in Class AAA discus this season with a throw of 142 feet, 3 inches. That's nearly 10 feet farther than the next closest competitor.
Campbell, who also qualified in the shot put, has a personal-best throw of 148-3. She's hoping to touch 150.
“I'm just hoping to do my personal best. Every time I throw a discus PR I get excited because I know there's so much more there,” Campbell said. “Maybe not as excited about an inch or two, but when I go five or six feet more, I get excited.”
Seneca Valley's 3,200-relay team looks forward to having one more meal together. The Raiders partake in pre-race pasta the night before big races.
“It's a lot of fun,” Brett Foster said. “We are driving up for the meet Thursday night and are going to look for an Italian place around Shippensburg to go to.”
Before the WPIAL Class AAA meet last Thursday, pre-race pasta at the Olive Garden wasn't going to cut it for the Raiders' Tanner Quiggle.
Bad luck during last season's WPIAL Class AAA championship meet made a change necessary.
“Last year, we were seeded fourth and in third place with 100 meters to go,” said Quiggle, a member of Seneca Valley's state-bound 3,200-meter relay team. “Brett Foster, who was our closer, our ringer last year, tripped and fell and we finished seventh.”
Hoping for better luck, Quiggle, Foster, Mike Kolor and Bryce Benjamin went to Noodles & Company last week instead.
Better karma followed with the Raiders finishing the race in 7:55.52 seconds, missing out on winning the WPIAL title by a hundredth of a second, but qualified for states.
“That's all we thought about all season long. How are we going to come back and redeem ourselves?” Quiggle said. “I remember when Brett came around and took the baton I was yelling, 'let's redeem ourselves.'”
Having that extra practice was beneficial for Foster, who also qualified in the 800. He's hoping that this weekend Seneca Valley can come close to the national qualifying time of 7:53.
“There's a lot to be said for having one more year of experience,” Foster said. “Seeing as we had Mike Kolor being a freshman and everyone being an underclassmen, we've had an extra year to hone our craft and be more experienced.”
Butler's Jared Blakely wanted his senior year to be special. When his first throw against Pine-Richland and Fox Chapel was 115 feet, it looked like his nerves were getting the best of him again.
“My first throw was god awful,” Blakely said. “After that I was thinking 'It's just like practice. Hey, let's do it.' I hit 135 and it got me first place.”
Blakely, who qualified in the discus with a throw of 147-6, earned his first state berth. Previously, he couldn't find a way to make his practice results match the meets.
“My maturity, definitely,” said Blakely on what changed for his senior year. “I had hit high marks in practice, I just didn't do it in the meets.”
Blakely, like Campbell, hopes to accomplish something worthy of putting on the fridge.
“I definitely would love to take first, after I didn't do so well last year,” Campbell said. “As long as I medal, I'll have some feeling of accomplishment.”
