Decision on wells coming in August
ADAMS TWP — While 35 people showed up Monday night at the township supervisors meeting, none spoke about the Marcellus shale gas wells planned for a farm off Denny Road.
Familiar faces in the crowd, both for and against the gas wells, remained silent when supervisors Chairman Donald Aiken opened the public comment portion of the meeting.
But township solicitor Mike Gallagher, on Aiken’s prompting, announced that those who want a two-mile overlay placed around the Mars School District schools where gas drilling would be prohibited as well as those who oppose such a move will have one more chance to make their case.
Gallagher said because the supervisors have asked the township planning commission and township code enforcement officials to look at the feasibility of the overlay, residents can speak to the commission on June 4.
Gallagher said the planning commission members will make their recommendation to the supervisors at July’s township meeting, and the supervisors will then announce their decision at their August meeting.
A group of parents say the six wells planned for the Bob and Kim Geyer farm, which is close to all five district buildings, would be unsafe so close to the schools.
The group has provided the municipalities within two miles of the schools along Route 228 with research on the effects of unconventional gas drilling on children.
They also have hired an attorney who successfully argued before the state Supreme Court to return zoning rights to municipalities after they were superseded by Act 13, the state’s gas act. That attorney, Jordan Yeager, also provided the municipalities with advice on their rights regarding zoning.
But property owners in the areas of the prospective wells who have leased their land to drillers say the supervisors do not have the right to dictate what can be done with private properties.
