Facade needs fixing

Westinghouse building has cosmetic issues

CRANBERRY TWP — The entire facade of the main complex at Westinghouse Electric Co.’s headquarters here might have to be replaced after reports have surfaced of “cosmetic problems,” according to township manager Jerry Andree.

Sheila Holt, a spokeswoman for Westinghouse, said Friday that the building is still safe for the thousands of employees and that the complex is structurally sound.

The complex, which features three main buildings and a fourth that is offset from the rest, is only five years old. The cosmetic problems are confined to the three buildings that make up the main complex, which is on the south side of Route 228.

Holt pointed out that Westinghouse does not own the buildings, but leases them from Columbia Property Trust in Atlanta, Ga.

Tripp Sullivan, a spokesman for the trust company, said Friday that the cosmetic issues consist of water leaking into windows when it rains. He too reiterated that the building is in no way structurally unsafe.

“We’re working closely with Westinghouse on this, and as being the landlord of the building, we’re certainly going to fulfill our obligations and look forward to fixing any problems as quickly as possible,” he said.

According to Andree, township officials have been in talks with Westinghouse officials about the permitting process that will be necessary if construction or repair work is needed.

“It is cosmetic work affecting the facade of the building, and there’s definitely no structural or safety issues associated,” Andree said. “We’ve had discussions with Westinghouse officials, mainly about the process if permitting is necessary.”

Andree said any kind of work done at the site would have to be approved by township officials during any permitting process.

Westinghouse moved to Cranberry Township in 2009 after construction was complete on the $200 million, 83-acre headquarters in the Cranberry Woods office park.

Two of the three buildings at the main complex are four floors, while the other building is five floors. The two buildings with four floors have slightly more than 200,000 square feet of space while the other building has more than half of that.

Westinghouse signed a 15-year lease for the buildings.
