Library event slated

Mars to show all its offerings

MARS — A new event will offer family fun and a peek into the offerings at the borough library.

Mars Public Library Day will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 at the library at 107 Grand Ave.

The brainchild of librarian Vincent Gadrix will allow residents of Mars and Valencia, and Adams and Middlesex townships to get a read on all the books, magazines, audio books, DVDs, child and adult programs and Wi-Fi access at the library.

“It’s an opportunity for people to come to the library to see what we have to offer,” Gadrix said.

Programs and activities will be available for adults and children.

The Western Pennsylvania Railroad Museum will set up a model train display. A children’s story time will be from 11 to 11:45 a.m., and children also can pet miniature animals from noon to 3 p.m. at a petting zoo.

The Mars History and Landmark Society will give a PowerPoint presentation entitled “Historical Mars,” and the Kiski Astronomers will teach visitors how to use a telescope.

“Throughout the day, we’ll have various programs for people of all ages,” Gadrix said.

He said hot dogs, popcorn and soft drinks will be available for free.

“Libraries are always fundraising, and rightly so,” Gadrix said. “We wanted to have an event where it’s a non-fundraising day. Everyone can come down and enjoy the activities and see what the library has to offer for them.”

John Watson, president of the historical and landmark society, said the “Historical Mars” presentation will go over the borough’s formation, how it has changed over the years and significant events since the early 1800s.

He said two speakers will share the information, and there will be a number of pictures dating from the early 1900s to the present.

“Mars was once a major hub,” Watson said. “People came from Cranberry to shop in Mars.”
