Legion prepares flags for downtown display
As Memorial Day approaches, Butler's Main Street is about to undergo its annual All-American makeover courtesy of the American Legion 117 and CenturyLink.
Jim Dittmer of the American Legion said CenturyLink will hang 73 American flags on the Gen. Richard Butler Bridge, the southside bridge off Center Avenue and along Main Street.
Dittmer said the flags measure 3 feet by 5 feet and are made of nylon in the U.S.
Before the flags are hung, the Legion fixes up any of the flags from a special fund, Dittmer said. It cost about $700 this spring to prepare the flags and outfit them with spinners to avoid tangling, he said.
The Legion retires damaged or faded flags, but flags that just need a cleaning go to Hutchinson's Cleaners on Negley Avenue, where anyone can have a flag cleaned for free.
“We don't use pink, white and blue flags,” Dittmer said. “They're always red, white and blue.”
He said the flags will remain on display until Veterans Day in November.
“I'd like to see them up year round on every pole,” Dittmer said, “but that gets very expensive.”
