Knuckling down

Karns City's Wyatt Everetts delivers a pitch against Redbank Valley at Kelly Automotive Park.

Matt Yough, Tyler Kepple and Holden Martin are three hard-throwing pitchers for the Karns City baseball team.

Wyatt Everetts is not.

And that just may make him a secret weapon down the stretch for the Gremlins.

Everetts is a left-hander who throws an array of pitches from different arm angles. He also showcased a knuckleball in an 11-1 five-inning mercy-rule win over Redbank Valley at Kelly Automotive Park Wednesday night.

“It's a big change-up from them to me,” Everetts said of the other pitchers on the Karns City staff. “I'm way different than they are. I've also been told when I pitch I have a slow wind-up, so the ball looks faster coming out than it really is.”

That added up to trouble for Redbank Valley Wednesday in Everetts' first start of the season.

Everetts struck out eight and scattered three hits in five innings.

He came into the game with only four innings under his belt this season.

“I've been waiting for it. I've been waiting for my time,” Everetts said. “I'm not one of the top guys on the staff, so I know we have to get them going. (Coach Randy Collins) decided to throw me, and I was pretty ecstatic.”

Collins said the time was right to get Everetts some work.

“He's put in a lot of effort and work in the off-season,” Collins said. “Coming into the season, we knew we were going to need his arm. Unfortunately, with the way the weather has been, we haven't played a lot of games in a row. That's why I wanted to get him in today.”

Everetts got plenty of run support thanks to his offense — and the Redbank Valley defense.

The Gremlins scored five runs on five Redbank Valley errors, scored two more on wild pitches and one more on a balk.

Tyler Dunn did have a two-run single and Yough a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning for the only three RBI for Karns City (9-2, 3-1).

Everetts had pinpoint control early in the count, which set up his secondary pitches.

“Once I get that first-pitch strike, it makes my curveball and knuckleball better,” Everetts said. “They aren't my primary pitches, so once I get ahead I can show the hitter something different and hopefully get them off-balance.”

That included a knuckleball, a pitch Everetts tinkered with this summer.

“I just started throwing it this offseason,” he said. “I figured I just had a fastball and a curveball and I needed something else.”

Everetts also developed a side-arm delivery. He dips down so low on some occasions that he becomes almost a submarine pitcher.

“I'm definitely pleased with the performance from him tonight,” Collins said. “That was typical Wyatt.”
