Disqualification costs SRU team track title

SHIPPENSBURG — Slippery Rock University's women's track and field team was denied the PSAC championship Saturday when its 4x800 meter relay team was disqualified at Shippensburg's Seth Grove Stadium.

The DQ enabled the host Red Raiders to win the meet — their fifth consecutive conference outdoors title — by two points.

Officials deemed the Rock's final baton exchange was done outside of the zone. SRU would have finished third in the event and garnered six team points.

A protest was filed after the final event, but no changes were made following a lengthy meeting with the games committee and officials.

Shippensburg finished with 112 points to The Rock's 110.

Butler graduate Jasmine Bailey won the 200 meter dash in 25.34 seconds and joined fellow Butler grad Katelyn Wetzel, Julie Galante and Emily Moroco in the winning 4x100 relay.

Julia Cain won the pole vault and Sam Taylor claimed the javelin for The Rock.

SRU's men finished third in the PSAC meet as David Reinhardt was named Outstanding Field Athlete of the competition.

Reinhardt placed in all four throwing events he entered, finishing fourth in the javelin, third in the discus, eighth in the shot put and fifth in the hammer throw. Tyler Kachelries won the javelin for The Rock.

Shippensburg easily won the men's team title with 278 points. East Stroudsburg had 104 points and SRU had 90.

Seneca Valley graduate Hunter Williams placed seventh in the 400 meters and eighth in the 200. He ran a leg of SRU's 4x100 relay that placed fourth.

SRU will send select athletes to compete at Allegheny College Friday and will close the season at the NCAA Championships May 22-24.
