Threat causes BC3 to close facility on Tuesday

UNION TWP, Lawrence County — Butler County Community College’s Lawrence Crossing facility will be closed Tuesday, following a threat that a shooting would take place that day.

College spokeswoman Susan Changnon said this morning that school officials spoke with the FBI on Wednesday, who advised them to either beef up security that day or close.

After some discussing, BC3 officials decided that closing that day would be in the best interest of safety. All other BC3 facilities will be open that day.

On Tuesday, two written threats were found on a stall in a men’s bathroom at the facility outside of New Castle. One said that there was a bomb in the school and another said there would be a shooting next Tuesday.

The 150 people in the building had to be evacuated, and the school remained closed for the rest of the day.

Next Tuesday was supposed to be the first day of final examinations. Changnon said that the college is working to adjust its exam schedule so all students can take their exams.

She advised students to contact faculty to find out when their finals will take place.

She also said that there will be an increased police presence at the campus for an indefinite time. An investigation is ongoing.
